Stay comfortable, safe, and ready for every adventure in the Atlas Mountains and beyond.
Planning a trekking trip in Morocco? Whether you’re heading for a day hike in the High Atlas or a multi-day trek through Berber villages and desert dunes, packing right is essential — and the seasons make a big difference. Here’s your go-to guide on what to bring, broken down by season.
Spring (March–May)
Spring is one of the best times to trek in Morocco — mild temperatures, blooming valleys, and snow still topping the peaks.
Essentials:
- Waterproof hiking boots (broken in)
- Moisture-wicking t-shirts & base layers
- Lightweight fleece or softshell jacket
- Compact rain jacket or poncho
- Trekking pants (not jeans)
- Sun hat & sunglasses
- Sunscreen & lip balm with SPF
- Refillable water bottle (1.5L+)
- Lightweight gloves (for chilly mornings)
- Buff or scarf for wind & sun protection
Summer (June–August)
Summer in the mountains can be hot during the day but cool at night. Avoid low-altitude hikes during midday and be ready for strong sun.
Essentials:
- Breathable long-sleeve shirts for sun protection
- Light trekking trousers or shorts (modest length)
- Sun hat or wide-brimmed cap
- High SPF sunscreen (apply often!)
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Sandals or camp shoes for the evening
- Hydration pack or large water bottles
- Electrolyte tablets or hydration salts
In summer, early morning starts are best to avoid the afternoon heat.
Autumn (September–November)
Clear skies, crisp air, and colorful landscapes — fall is another fantastic season for trekking.
Essentials:
- Midweight hiking boots (water-resistant)
- Merino wool or synthetic base layers
- Windbreaker or light insulated jacket
- Beanie & gloves for early mornings
- Trekking poles (for steep or rocky terrain)
- Headlamp or flashlight
- Personal first-aid kit
- Small drybag for electronics or documents
Winter (December–February)
Winter treks are beautiful but can be cold, especially above 2,000m — snow is common in higher elevations.
Essentials:
- Insulated hiking boots or snow-ready footwear
- Thick socks (and spares)
- Warm thermals (top & bottom)
- Down or heavy fleece jacket
- Waterproof shell (pants & jacket)
- Beanie, neck gaiter, and thermal gloves
- Microspikes or crampons (for icy paths)
- Hand warmers (optional but useful)
For climbs like Mount Toubkal, winter gear is a must. Guided tours are strongly recommended.
Other Useful Items (All Seasons)
- Small backpack (20–30L for day treks)
- Headlamp or flashlight
- Trekking poles
- Reusable snacks or energy bars
- Travel insurance
- Personal ID/passport copy
- Toilet paper & hand sanitizer
- Camera or phone with power bank
- Lightweight sleeping bag (for multi-day treks)
Pro Tips from the Trail
- Dress in layers: Morocco’s mountains can go from hot to cold fast.
- Avoid cotton: It holds sweat and chills easily — opt for synthetic or wool.
- Pack light: Especially if mules or porters are not included.
- Ask your guide: Every itinerary is different — check what’s provided and what you must bring.
